FACT SHEET
The lighthouse was built here at Toward Point by Robert Stevenson in 1812. The Cumbrae Lighthouse Trust later Clyde Lighthouse Trust and now Clyde Port Authority had control of this area of the Clyde from Cumbrae Islands to Port Glasgow to collect shipping dues. Three lighthouses were built in the area including Toward Point, Cloch Lighthouse and Little Cumbrae Lighthouse that was the first in the area to be built to replace the beacon lighthouse at the top of the hill on Little Cumbrae Island.
Robert Stevenson's step father Thomas Smith was the chief engineer with the young Robert as supervisor overseeing his first lighthouse being built in his career. Robert as a thank you to the orphan school in Edinburgh decided he would donate his first wage to the school as a thank you for support and education.
