The postcards in this collection date from late 1800s to late 1900s. Postcards in early times were used to send text messages for family updates, they were also used as celebration cards such as birthday's. The postcards were usually created at local shops or post offices from family photographs. Examples of these are seen in the collection.
Some postcards were used by autograph hunters, an example of this in the collection is signed by a lighthouse keeper showing the details of the lighthouse autograph request. Lighthouse keepers collected postcards and sent these to each other. The family members also did this and examples of this type of postcard are shown in this collection providing us with the opportunity to glimpse into the past.
